Meet the Staff - Bart Halsberghe, DVM

Dr. Halsberghe

I was Born in Kortrijk, Belgium, where I spent most of my youth. It was at an early age that I was introduced into the world of horses. It soon became a passion, a passion I took over from my mother. I spent most of my weekends and vacations in the equestrian centre, where I started breaking and training horses for eventing. (on the picture you see me and my horse “Nikay”, she is seventeen and semi-retired, I broke her as a 3 year old and did a lot of three day events with her).

I quickly knew I wanted to become an equine veterinarian. I went to vet school at the university of Ghent, Belgium, where I graduated in 2003. As a young vet I wanted to work abroad to learn new things and see the world. First I worked in a mixed practice in England for a little over a year, after that I came to the United States (Louisiana) where I worked in a racehorse practice for almost 4 years. Since vet school I always had an interest in lameness and diagnostics and the racehorse practice gave me the chance to develop and fine tune my skills in those areas.

In my spare time I like to let off steam and there is no better sport than triathlon to do that. My biggest achievement in the sport was finishing the Ironman of the UK in 2005, an accomplishment that I am still proud off. My biggest support is my wife “Lien”. She’s from Belgium too and has followed me and supported me in everything I did. Recently we were blessed with a beautiful daughter “Sarah”, she is three months old and our little angel.
