Sports Medicine and Lameness
Diagnostics:
Peninsula Equine is fully equipped with advanced imaging modalities, including but not limited to digital radiology, ultrasonography, and nuclear scintigraphy, to help correctly diagnose your horse's performance issue.
Digital Radigraphy: Just as digital cameras have made photography more efficient and of higher quality by eliminating film, Digital X-Ray systems provide us radiographs that can be viewed immediately on a high-resolution monitor without need for film developing. Our DR system also provides us with sophisticated image processing tools, giving our veterinary staff much greater depth of information that can be enlarged for far better detail. Radiographs can easily be burned on a CD or uploaded on our PACS server for quick retrieval across the country.
Ultrasonography: Peninsula Equine Medical Center has two ultrasound units that we put to good use to diagnose and monitor joint, tendon and ligament injuries. We also utilize this tool to direct our therapy to the specific area affected. Ultrasound is also used to evaluate ailments such as pneumonia, abdominal pain, cardiac disease, umbilical infection and anatomical sites with a mass or swelling. Ultrasound is also used to manage reproduction and pregnancy. Since ultrasound produces a “real time” image, information about moving structures such as the heart and intestinal tract can be obtained. Peninsula Equine is one of the four equine hospitals to host the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathologists [ISELP] meetings each year in August. ISLEP is a group of veterinarians dedicated to advancing the role of ultrasonography and all imaging in the pursuit of diagnostic excellence in the sport horse world. Nuclear Scintigraphy: Nuclear medicine is a branch of medicine and medical imaging that uses radioactive isotopes in the diagnosis of disease. Nuclear scintigraphy, also known as bone scan is used alongside other diagnostic modalities, such as x ray and ultrasound, to help in the diagnosis of skeletal problems. Because scintigraphy is relatively sensitive, it also allows monitoring of the healing process, a factor that is especially important regarding horses returning to work or training The theory behind bone scanning is that where bone is damaged, the body tries to repair the damage and thus the bone turnover increases. This is known as bone 'remodelling'. To assess this, the horse is injected with a substance that is both radioactive and accumulates in areas of active bone turnover. By measuring the radioactivity of the bone, the degree of bone turnover can be measured. The gamma camera, coupled to a high powered computer, measures the level of radioactivity and converts this information into a 2D image.
