Basic objectives:
Offer a comprehensive program of advanced education in the field of equine lamenesses and osteoarticualar, musculotendinous and nervous pathology, covering the different parts of the locomotor system of the horse.
Goals and Missions:
General Goals:
1. Continuing education of equine practitioners for a better management of patients.
2. Development of knowledge on the diagnosis and management of the causes of pain and lesions involving the structures of the locomotor system of horses
Specific Goals:
1. To present the anatomical and biomechanical data allowing understanding of the etiopathogenesis of the lesions as well as the management of the different conditions ;
2. To shear the last developments in diagnostic imaging of bones, joints, tendons, muscles, nervous system;
3. Standardization of imaging procedures for a better communication between practitioners and /or referring centers ;
4. To improve the technical skills of practitioners in the use of non invasive diagnostic procedures ;
5. Publications of new diagnostic procedures, new concepts in pathologic conditions of the equine locomotor system, unknown clinical entities…
Format:
- 4 year programme (2006-2010)
- 4 seminars (2 days each) a year organized at 4 different equine clinics (North-east, middle North, South west)
- Each seminar (15 hours) is composed of :
- 1st day : lectures + clinical cases
- 2nd day : 2-3 hour of demonstration + 4-5 hours of practice
- Notes will be distributed to the participants
8 Topics:
- Distal frontlimb : foot, pastern, fetlock joint
- Middle frontlimb : palmar fetlock, metacarpus+tendons, carpus, carpal canal
- Proximal frontlimb : forearm, elbow and shoulder
- Distal hindlimb : foot, pastern, fetlock, metatarsus
- Middle hindlimb : hock and crus
- Proximal hindlimb : stifle and thigh
- Neck and thoracolumbar area
- Lumbosacral area and pelvis
For each topic, the following data will be considered :
- Descriptive anatomy,
- Functional anatomy and Biomechanics
- Clinical (physical and dynamic) examination including diagnostic blocks
- Diagnostic imaging (radiography, ultrasonography, nuclear scintigraphy, MRI)
- Treatment and management
- Prognosis and evolution
Next Seminar:
Peninsula Equine, August 25-27, 2006
End of 2007:
The 8 topics will be covered. The practitioners having completed the 8 sessions could be considered for an evaluation (see below) to become the first diplomates of the ISELP.
This programm can be completed in a 3 year or a 4 year period. As soon as the 8 topics have been attended the practitioner can apply for the accreditation.
Requirements for application to the ISELP examination:
- To complete the 8 sessions (120 hours of continuing education);
- To demonstrate at least 3 years of practice in a clinic having a recognized activity in the field of equine lameness and imaging;
- To present a case log of 50 cases well documented.
Requirements for accreditation by the ISELP:
To pass successfully the examination based on:
- a multiple choice questionnaire;
- a practical demonstration of technical exercises on a horse (block, imaging technique…);
- a presentation of 3 clinical cases showing the diagnostic approach based on different imaging procedures and the management of the case.
